Antonio Marras FW24: Weaving History and Modernity

At this season’s Milan Fashion Week, Antonio Marras unveiled a collection that was a profound narrative, intertwining the threads of the past with the essence of contemporary fashion. Inspired by the legendary Sardinian princess Eleanor of Arborea, who lived between the mid-1300s and early 1400s, Marras’ Fall/Winter 2024 collection paid tribute to a figure of strength, independence, and innovation.

Eleanor, the last indigenous ruler of Sardinia capable of uniting the island under one flag, was celebrated for her progressive spirit and her role in the creation of the Carta de Logu—an extraordinary legal text that outlined the rules of civil and criminal law in the Sardinian language. This document, advanced for its time, addressed various aspects of daily life, from fire prevention to land ownership, and was particularly notable for its enlightened stance on women’s rights. It remained in force until 1827, showcasing Eleanor’s lasting impact on Sardinian society.

Drawing on this rich historical backdrop, Marras’ collection was a lavish display of embroidered brocades, floral-patterned damasks, and an array of patterns including checks, houndstooth, pinstripes, chevrons, and camouflage. The designs were further enhanced by luxurious materials such as opulent sheepskins, aged stretch leather, and a variety of embellishments including zips, broaches, and buckles. The fabric choices and designs echoed the regal and rebellious nature attributed to Eleanor, with each piece reflecting her regal, yet innovative spirit.

The color palette, inspired by the greens of the undergrowth, yellow, red, gold, and black, painted a picture of Sardinia’s rich landscapes and the vibrancy of its history. The collection’s use of glitter, dangling threads, and a wide range of textures—from devoré velvets to rose voiles and brushstroke chiffons—created a visual feast that was both a homage to the past and a bold statement for the present.

Marras’ FW24 show was not just a display of fashion but a celebration of a powerful historical figure whose legacy of empowerment, justice, and equality resonates to this day. By infusing his collection with the essence of Eleanor of Arborea’s story, Marras reminded us of the enduring power of fashion to tell stories, evoke emotions, and inspire change.

The dramatic setting of the show, reminiscent of the medieval towers that confined rebellious women, served as a powerful reminder of the struggles faced by women throughout history. Yet, it also underscored the collection’s message of strength, independence, and beauty, celebrating the journey from confinement to empowerment. A moving homage was also paid to Carmelo Tedeschi, a craftsman of unparalleled talent whose last creations adorned the runway. Through this tribute, Marras not only celebrated Tedeschi’s artistry and passion but also underscored the importance of craftsmanship in the world of fashion. It was a poignant reminder that behind every garment lies a story of human skill, creativity, and dedication.
