Like the most famous milliners before her, Gigi Burris affirmed her craft in Paris as a student at Parsons School of Design. While there, she visited mercerie shops and became fascinated with the embellishments found inside and the romance of craftmanship.
Gigi was nominated for the Designer of the Year Award at Parsons, and following her 2009 graduation, she began an apprenticeship with couture milliner Leah Chalfen. She assisted stylists for several years while pursuing her passion for millinery on the side. During this time, she collaborated with stylists to create custom commissions for editorials.
The Gigi Burris Millinery label followed soon after, and with it, a deep respect for artisanship. The designer has carved out a unique place in the hat-making industry by trusting her instinct – marrying time-honored techniques with the appreciation that “beauty lies within the wearer.”
Gigi was a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Finalist in 2014, and a CFDA member since 2015. She was honored in the Forbes 30 under 30 list in 2014. She is also an advocate for handcraftsmanship, sustainable slow production, and local artisan manufacturing.
For SS22, the collection features upcycled linen, intricate strips of straw woven into fine Panama straws patterns, crochet raffia, and bamboo caning. Each hat is hand-blocked using simply steam, rope, and the skill of the blocker.
What is even more valuable is that each item is crafted in a factory that has spanned generations, with a dedication to perfecting the nuance of beauty, and ultimately creating a product that both delights and lasts for seasons to come.
