Studio 189 SS23: On Heritage and Craft

Studio 189, helmed by Abrima Erwiah and Rosario Dawson, opened its SS23 showcase with a poignant tribute to Erwiah’s late father, setting the stage for a collection deeply rooted in family and community bonds. Following the touching homage and an inspiring dance performance meant to honor the departed, the runway came alive with a predominantly print-centric collection named “Mélange.”

This title not only symbolized the diverse blend of prints and hues but also celebrated the varied backgrounds, ages, and physiques of the models. Mélange aptly encapsulated the plethora of techniques employed, including hand batik, weaving, patchwork, and indigo dyeing.

Studio 189’s pieces speak of the skilled hands that crafted them, with a clear focus on narrating tales through artisanal expertise. This approach captivated attendees, and while the sheer number of showcased pieces could seem extensive, the core message remained clear and direct, unified by harmonious print combinations, patchwork, and layering.

Highlights included hand-painted florals and stripes, along with kente designs. Particularly, striped woven fabrics in specific looks stood out, introducing a sophisticated twist.

An exemplary item was a button-down skirt accentuated with smooth silk godets. The show came full circle, concluding with another dance act, encapsulating Studio 189’s themes of joy, festivity, and reverence.
