New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2021 Collections Started with Ulla Johnson

With the Ulla Johnson FW21 digital runway show taking place on Friday, February 12th, 2021 at the David H. Koch Theater, Lincoln Center, NYC, and the R13 show on Saturday, NYFW has already started and will last until the 18th. Most of the shows are on the CFDA Fashion Calendar and many are on the NYFW.com schedule, so you can check what will happen this week by checking both online. Stay tuned for our detailed coverage, because we have made sure to present to you and analyze the majority of the shows in an effort to support NYC and the designers presenting their creations in this wonderful city, which has suffered a lot over the last year because of the pandemic.

Ulla Johnson impressed us with artisanal techniques and details hand-crafted by various communities. Italian gold foiled knit and handloom ikat, made-in-NYC handknits, and Turkish embroidered shearling, handmade hair barrettes crafted by our artisan partners in Kenya, and incredible prints were among the enviable featured items, materials, and techniques. The iconic venue at Lincoln Center was graced for the event with magical, other-worldly sculptures by Nacho Carbonell — an artist and designer based in Eindhoven, NL — represented by the Carpenters Workshop Gallery.

The Fall ‘21 show is staged in Manhattan’s iconic David H. Koch Theater, a lavish and storied home to the city’s performing arts for many decades. Honoring the historic building designed by Philip Johnson and celebrating the creative disciplines that continue to inspire and bring optimism, a live musical performance by Juilliard School alumni playing the Viola de Gamba and the Theorbo created a baroque score for the collection.

Two unique works – a large welded metal, mesh and concrete lamp and table – by Spanish artist Nacho Carbonell dress the stage. Globally recognised for his tactile, organically-shaped sculptures and inventive approach to using natural materials in his work, Carbonell captures a synergy with nature reflected in Ulla’s ethos.
