The famous Chinese-born NY-based designer presented at Lincoln Center her FW15 collection during the Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, sharing with her audience and loyal clientele important segments of her origins mixed with the cosmopolitan features she developed along the way.
Vivienne Tam proved once more that she can produce relevant, updated versions of lasting traditions to be adopted by women today!
The collection is an urban romantic take on chinoiserie – the European concept of China, sparked by its imagination of the mystical and exotic Far East.
This prevailing aesthetic characterized by intricate designs that blend ornate European design with rich imagery from the East – lush renderings of birds, pagodas, boats, bamboos, bridges and more – was iterated in mirrors, furniture, wall coverings, draperies and decorative art objects that dominated interior and fashion design.
The designer is known for successful runway collaborations and special-edition items along with her main Ready-to-Wear line. This time, she partnered again with Pandora, the official sponsor of NY Fashion week. “I’m very excited to be collaborating with Pandora again for another season… I love how I’m able to customize the hand-finished, modern jewelry to complement my collection,” said Tam.
Notable guests at the show included Adrienne Bailon (Actress, Co-host, The Real), Anna Netrebko (Metropolitan Opera Singer), Andrea Tantaros (Co-host, Outnumbered), Andrew Bolton (Curator, Anna Wintour Costume Center at the Met Museum), Che’nelle (Japanese Pop Artist), DJ Helena, Eric West (Actor, World War Z), Jeannie Mai (TV Personality, Co-host, The Real), Karen Hu (Miss China 2014), Kerris Dorsey (Actress, Ray Donovan), Kelly Rutherford (Actress, Gossip Girl), Lindsey Morgan (Actress, The 100), NERVO (DJ Duo: Miriam Nervo /Olivia Nervo), Oluchi Orlandi (Host, Africa’s Next Top Model), Phillip Bloch (Celebrity Stylist and TV Personality), Shuying Jiang (Chinese Film and TV Star), Stephanie Szostak (Actress, Satisfaction), Tashiana Washington (Actress/Singer, Gimme Shelter), Thatiana Diaz (Miss New York 2014), Vanessa Ray (Actress, Blue Bloods, Pretty Little Liars).
I was blown away by the collection’s exquisite craftsmanship and its eclectic essence. Things that stood out for me were the quilting, the prints, the lace detailing/trimming, the fabulous neutrals, the see-through long tunics over plaid, the loose roomy pants, the contrast of red with black, the lace socks worn with booties, some wonderful cocktail dresses and ensembles with accentuated waist and flared mini skirt, the Victorian collars and embellishments, and finally some breath-taking massively printed and decorated evening gowns!
