NYFW FW19: Sally LaPointe Echoing Elvis’ 1968 Comeback

As always Sally LaPointe presents minimalist shows with maximalist theatrical details. Fashion is top-notch and runway offerings as visually mixed with artistic level installations; this time it was with neon lights. It was in tune with the monochromatic trend and the show was characteristically divided into big color families, all equally charming. Music is important for the designer, hence the reference for the season. Before and after the show, attendees mingled under the neon light bars becoming part of the overall design vision.

The designer explained that “Fall 2019 drew style references from Elvis’ 1968 Comeback Special and applied them to modern day dressing.” The collection was presented on February 12th in New York in Gallery I at Spring Studios. The set design featured large scaffolding structures that created illuminated tunnels, highlighting each look as it moved down the runway.

The collection’s attention to utilitarian yet feminine details with nods to clean menswear-inspired tailoring and strong silhouettes became a purposeful uniform for the modern woman that exudes confidence, attitude, and sex appeal. Snakeskin and leathers were found throughout and in a wide array of styles and treatments, including as a print on silk jacquard and embossed leather.

Natural snakeskin, introduced for the first time, was tanned and embellished with the season’s zippers and 3D cargo-inspired pockets. Faux fur made its runway debut this season in two classic collared coats, while both dyed fox fur and dyed shearling appeared as bold, colorful statement pieces.

The monochromatic looks, which drew focus to the clothing’s textural elements seen in chunky knits, striped stitched sequins, and smooth leather, were shown in black, ivory, jade, bronze, lavender, and rich oxblood red.

Front row has bejeweled with ultra-elegant guests including Bella Thorne, Mathilde Ollivier, Olivia Palermo, TK Wonder, Cipriana Quann, Aurora James, and May Kwok. I was once again so lucky to attend this show and enjoy a balanced glamorous vision on what to wear right now!
