Milan unfolds in its most magnetic form each April, and during Salone del Mobile, the city becomes a stage for design at its most expressive and intellectually charged. From April 21 to April 26, 2026, Doppia Firma returns as one of the most compelling cultural highlights of the Fuori Salone, unfolding within the evocative setting of Casa degli Artisti in the Brera district.

This year’s edition draws inspiration from the Grand Tour, the historic journey that once shaped Europe’s cultural imagination. Reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, the exhibition invites visitors to experience Italy not as a destination, but as a layered narrative of materials, traditions, and evolving craftsmanship. Each work reflects a passage through time, where heritage is neither preserved nor replicated, but thoughtfully reimagined.

At the center of this dialogue, Arthur Arbesser brings his distinct design language into a new dimension. Widely recognized for his modernist approach to fashion—defined by graphic precision, bold color compositions, and architectural clarity—Arbesser extends his aesthetic beyond the runway through a collaboration with Turin-based artisan Andrea Bouquet. Working with wood, the partnership reveals a quieter, more tactile interpretation of his visual codes, where structure meets warmth and materiality becomes narrative.

As part of this collaboration, Arthur Arbesser introduces Scacco Matto, a cabinet that explores the expressive potential of pattern through a refined dialogue of checkerboard and striped motifs. Drawing on a visual vocabulary that moves seamlessly between historical references and contemporary design, the piece channels a dynamic interplay of rhythm and geometry. Handcrafted from smoked oak, maple, and cherry, it is realized through a meticulous inlay technique requiring absolute precision, resulting in a surface where every line aligns with deliberate intent. Its unexpected proportions give the cabinet a sculptural quality, while the interplay of materials and pattern creates a sense of movement across its form. The project ultimately reveals a shared creative vision, where design and craftsmanship converge into a singular, highly resolved object.

Throughout the exhibition, a series of twelve designer–artisan pairings unfolds as a constellation of creative exchanges. Each collaboration draws from a specific Italian territory and its associated materials, forming a rich cartography of craftsmanship. Murano glass from Venice captures light with poetic fluidity, while Florence’s heritage in metals and stone reveals intricate, almost sculptural refinement. In Rome, bronze carries a contemporary weight, while Naples offers expressive interpretations through porcelain and papier-mâché. Palermo’s ceramics and Milan’s paper craftsmanship complete a journey that feels both deeply rooted and forward-looking.

What defines Doppia Firma is its philosophy of shared authorship. Designers and artisans engage on equal footing, each contributing expertise and vision to a process grounded in dialogue. The resulting works carry a dual identity, shaped by exchange and experimentation, and infused with a sense of discovery that resonates throughout the exhibition.

The exhibition design enhances this experience through a language of restraint and light. A luminous white palette, punctuated by paper and reflective surfaces, creates an atmosphere that feels both immersive and contemplative. Each piece is given space to reveal its textures, its construction, and its story.

Set within Casa degli Artisti, a cultural hub dedicated to artistic production and interdisciplinary exchange, the exhibition gains an added layer of meaning. The space itself reflects the values at the heart of Doppia Firma: openness, experimentation, and a continuous dialogue between past and present.

During Salone del Mobile, when Milan becomes the global epicenter of design, Doppia Firma 2026 offers a moment of reflection—an invitation to consider the enduring relevance of craftsmanship in contemporary culture. Through the lens of designers like Arthur Arbesser, tradition is not revisited nostalgically, but transformed into a living, evolving expression of creativity.
