A Feast of Design: Inside IKEA’s “Food For Thought” Experience at Milan Design Week 2026

At Milan Design Week 2026, IKEA invites the global design community to gather around the table—quite literally. With its latest immersive exhibition, Food For Thought, the brand transforms the act of cooking, dining, and sharing into a sensorial design narrative that feels as timely as it is transportive.

Set in the creative pulse of Porta Venezia at Spazio Maiocchi, the installation unfolds from April 21 to 26 as a multi-layered environment where interiors, gastronomy, and culture converge. This year marks a new chapter for IKEA in Milan, shifting into a neighborhood known for its dynamic artistic energy, and reimagining how design lives within everyday rituals.

The exhibition is conceived as a contemporary interpretation of a Swedish saluhall, an indoor market hall re-envisioned through a modern lens. Within this setting, design becomes both backdrop and protagonist. Visitors move through thoughtfully curated room settings that explore how food shapes the emotional and functional landscapes of the home—from intimate daily meals to celebratory gatherings that bring people together.

Central to the experience is a series of collaborations between visionary designers and acclaimed chefs, each duo crafting a unique spatial story paired with a culinary concept. Names such as Charlotte Taylor and Ben Lippett, alongside Maye Ruiz and Rosio Sanchez, bring their perspectives into dialogue, creating immersive environments that blur the line between kitchen and living space.

At the heart of the installation, a fully operational kitchen becomes a stage for live cooking performances, where design is activated in real time. Throughout the day, visitors are invited to taste menus inspired by each curated space, turning observation into participation. As evening falls, the atmosphere shifts effortlessly into aperitivo mode, echoing Milan’s signature social rhythm.

Beyond the multisensory installations, the exhibition also offers a first glimpse into the future of IKEA design. The SS26 presentation includes the world premiere of select pieces from the upcoming tenth edition of the IKEA PS collection, signaling a continued evolution of the brand’s democratic design philosophy. Alongside these launches, new statement lighting designs introduce a refined materiality and sculptural presence, reinforcing IKEA’s commitment to accessible yet elevated interiors.

The experience extends outdoors into a courtyard market inspired by Nordic food culture, while the BILLY Café—framed by the iconic bookcase—serves as a literary-meets-culinary retreat. Music, from live performances to DJ sets, pulses through the space, creating a continuous sense of movement and discovery.

With Food For Thought, IKEA reframes the home as a living canvas where design nourishes not only function, but also emotion, connection, and creativity.
