There are fabrics that decorate a garment, and there are fabrics that carry a civilization within their threads. For Zhongfang.Lijin, brocade belongs unmistakably to the latter. With Brocade Reborn, its Spring/Summer 2027 collection debuting during Milan Fashion Week in September 2026, the Chinese fashion house places centuries of textile knowledge at the center of a wardrobe conceived for the present.
Under the creative direction of He Rong, Zhongfang.Lijin approaches brocade as something alive: a material shaped by history yet capable of transformation. The collection is built around “Jin Mai” (锦脉), a concept that can be understood as the living veins or pulse of brocade. Warp and weft become a metaphor for continuity, tracing a line between craftsmanship, nature and contemporary design.
It is an evocative premise for a collection whose visual vocabulary begins long before a garment reaches the body. Chinese brocade traditions have evolved over centuries through complex weaving techniques, regional practices and changing aesthetics. In Brocade Reborn, that inheritance becomes the starting point for experimentation rather than a static reference to the past.
A Silk Story Written by Nature
Nature provides He Rong with some of the collection’s most poetic imagery. The mulberry leaf, silkworm cocoon and butterfly form a subtle narrative of metamorphosis, following the natural origins of silk through stages of growth and transformation.
The veins of leaves, the enveloping geometry of a cocoon and the delicacy of butterfly wings are translated into surfaces, motifs and silhouettes. Pleating introduces rhythm and dimensionality, while decorative details echo the intricacy of silk threads. Brocade, traditionally prized for the richness of its woven patterns, assumes a more structural role, helping determine the movement and character of the clothes themselves.
That relationship between textile and silhouette is essential to the collection. Rather than treating craftsmanship as an embellishment applied after the fact, Zhongfang.Lijin allows the properties of the material to inform the garment. Texture catches light; folds create shifting volumes; intricate surfaces invite a closer look. The effect speaks to He Rong’s unusually technical relationship with fashion.
The designer is a textile engineer and PhD researcher at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, as well as the founder and creative director of Zhongfang.Lijin. With more than two decades of fashion-industry experience, he has centered his creative research on fine silks and intricate brocades, exploring how traditional Chinese textile languages can inhabit contemporary menswear and womenswear.
That combination of engineering knowledge and design sensibility gives Brocade Reborn an intriguing intellectual foundation. Cloth becomes both subject and medium, with its construction, cultural associations and tactile possibilities informing the finished fashion.
Five Colors, One Elemental Language
Color carries its own cultural resonance throughout Spring/Summer 2027. Zhongfang.Lijin draws upon the Chinese tradition of the Five Elements, or Wu Xing, developing a palette whose shades move between airiness and depth.
Tianshui Bi emerges as a lucid blue-green recalling clear water beneath an open sky. Taoyao brings the tender warmth of peach blossom, while Mihe settles into a gentle honey-beige. Yuebai, literally evocative of moonlight, appears as a pale white touched with cool blue undertones. At the darker end of the spectrum, Dailan introduces a saturated indigo.
Together, these colors create a nuanced dialogue between softness and intensity. Pale tones have an almost atmospheric quality, while deeper shades give the brocade visual weight. Their progression also complements the collection’s recurring theme of regeneration: leaves, cocoons, wings and silk become part of the same cycle of nature, craft and dress.
He Rong Takes Zhongfang.Lijin to Milan
The Milan presentation marks an important international moment for Zhongfang.Lijin. The label has already established a presence on the China International Fashion Week calendar, while He Rong’s work has increasingly focused attention on the relationship between contemporary Chinese fashion and textile heritage.
His recent recognitions include the China-Chic Influence Award 2025, the China International Fashion Cultural Heritage Innovation Brand 2026 and the Golden Award for Silk Innovation 2026. He Rong also serves as an ambassador promoting Chinese textile cultural heritage, extending the philosophy behind his collections beyond the runway.
For the Milan debut, another name enters the story: Haining China Home Textile City, the major textile center presenting He Rong in Milan for the first time.
Located in Xucun, Haining, Zhejiang Province, the textile hub belongs to an extensive regional manufacturing and commercial ecosystem. Its scale offers some perspective on the environment surrounding Chinese textile production today. The 2026 autumn edition of the Haining China International Home Textiles Expo occupied approximately 250,000 square meters and brought together more than 2,500 factories, illustrating the extraordinary concentration of textile expertise and production in the area.
Haining’s connection with textiles extends from manufacturing and trading to design, exhibitions and technological development. Against this backdrop, presenting Zhongfang.Lijin in Milan carries a significance that reaches beyond a single seasonal collection: it brings the creative possibilities of a deeply established Chinese textile culture into an international fashion setting.
Brocade as a Living Language
The title Brocade Reborn ultimately reveals the collection’s central idea. Rebirth here does not require abandoning history. Instead, it comes through use, experimentation and reinterpretation.
This is particularly relevant to brocade, whose significance in China reaches far beyond ornament. Historic Chinese weaving traditions embody specialized skills transmitted across generations, and forms of traditional silk craftsmanship have received cultural-heritage recognition and protection. Such preservation keeps techniques and knowledge visible, yet fashion offers another form of continuity: allowing them to change.
He Rong’s answer is to place brocade back into motion. Across Zhongfang.Lijin’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection, silk heritage passes through pleats, contemporary proportions, botanical references and an elemental palette. The mulberry leaf becomes line; the cocoon suggests form; the butterfly lends its wings and sense of transformation. Threads once associated primarily with elaborate traditional textiles acquire another life on a modern silhouette.
There is something especially fitting about that idea arriving in Milan. Fashion is perpetually concerned with what comes next, while craftsmanship depends on remembering what came before. Brocade Reborn occupies the space between those two impulses, treating heritage as an active creative vocabulary. For Zhongfang.Lijin, the future begins at the loom. And in the hands of He Rong, every warp and weft becomes part of a continuing story—one in which Chinese brocade can travel, transform and find new forms while retaining the cultural memory woven into its fibers.
