Gaultier’s debut inspiration

falbalas1During the French Film Festival’s second day, we saw Jean Paul Gaultier at the French Institute in Athens describing the plot of his favorite movie “Falbalas” directed by Jacques Becker in 1945 and explaining why this scenario impressed him so much that he decided, when he was 11, to follow a fashion designer’s career. The story refers to the forbidden love between an engaged woman and a passionate fashion designer, her fiancé’s closest friend. The whole preparation of an Haute Couture fashion show in this full-of-burdens love story, made him isolate in his mind the magic and sparkling spirit of a fashion world characterized by great challenges and strong emotions. As we understood from his documentary the previous day, chez Gaultier’s, a fashion show is prepared just like those from old good days presented in Becker’s Parisian film. At the end of the film, Gaultier had a moving surprise by a fan who asked him to sign on her fine-quality leather jacket. The designer, thought hesitating, at first, to leave his “mark” on such a beautiful jacket, he was at last encouraged to do it, adding on it a rough cartoon of himself.
