There is much talk about the “zero waste” school of fashion which currently hit the NY Fashion Week, as the team work of students at the Parsons The New School for Design, in contradiction with the “zero-size” school of models which is regarded evil and harmful for the young. There is a controversy of course on the blogs about the authenticity and honesty of all these fashion “producers” promoting eco-friendly, sustainable solutions in fashion design. Anyway, I think they made excellent pieces of art out of scraps, which shows that limiting waste from the average 15% to ZERO is almost possible! NY Fashion Week this season has already made another quite optimistic statement which is related to the resurgence of the economy in the U.S. even though this is due to a significant increase of the Asian demand for luxury (and other) goods. This positive feeling is further expressed through the use of bright colors not only in the Spring/Summer but also in the Fall/Winter 2011-12 Collections such the Luca Luca. Designer Raul Melgoza who presented a great range of oranges told the Luxist: “Everyone is a bit more optimistic about the economy which is why I wanted to showcase color during what otherwise is normally a darker time.” Equally bright and luminous is American Vogue’s March issue featuring Lady Gaga just a little before the release of “Born This Way.” It will be on the newsstands on February 22.
