Mary Katrantzou at a Station

lfw_katrantzou1The London-based Greek designer Mary Katrantzou who was in Singapore in late May to stage a show at the inaugural Asia Fashion Exchange’s Star Creation competition gala dinner, made a huge impression with her Spring/Summer 2011 collection presented at a deserted Eurostar Waterloo Station platform built by Topshop. Digitalised ornate graphics on structured shoulders flowing gradually into ethereal skirts, reinforced the idea of structured shaping in fashion. Inspired by fashion photography and interior design, the shapes looked even more surreal than her previous ones. Mary had looked into anything from perfume bottles to blown-glasses to paintings before. Now she turns into images of living rooms, courtyards and house entrances printed on dresses and skirts. She’d been looking at the highly stylized 70s photography of Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin and the works of the Surrealist painter, René Magritte, when it occurred to her that the interiors in the pictures were just as important as the models. The talented designer prefered subtle hues in combination with darker shades for her body-con dresses and micro mini lampshade style skirts with tassels and feathers as trimming. Make-up was minimal with eye shadow bright and hair kept simple, slicked back in half pulled-through ponytails. Unique pieces made for women with strong sense of style include statement jewelry (chandelier necklaces) and garments embelished with mirrors, beading, metallic patchwork and flowing chiffon make her one of our favorite pop-neo-baroque womenswear designers, alhough she is only 27 years old. She belongs to the NewGen in the UK, as a part of the digital print revolution.

lfw_katrantzou3Her creations are available in 70 prestigious boutiques in 30 countries. Mary attended Rhode Island School of Design and then completed both her BA and MA at Central Saint Martins. She has previously worked for Sophia Kokosalaki and freelanced for Bill Blass, amongst other designers.
