African Designers Stunned Us!

The collective fashion show ‘Made in Africa’ by Arise Magazine at the Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center, was for the many people waiting on the long line to check in, the grand finale of the MB Fashion Week in NYC despite the fact that the last show was that of equally adorable Elene Cassis. I was invited to both but they ended up overlapping and for that matter I managed to attend only the first one. The African designers’ collections were packed with imagination, originality and positive vibes. I could attribute to all of them some common elements such as love for interesting textures, fluid fabrics, patterns and colors. Along with these features, one could notice major trends walking up and down this huge stage and reproduced in gigantic screen panels on the background. I just grouped them for you:
– Impressive patterns (tartan, abstract, floral and ethnic) in very vivid colors or sharp contrasts mixed together in very simple forms, midi and maxi lengths. The designers wanted to prove that traditional elements can be updated and become very modern.
– Sheer fabrics, light colors and simplicity made a statement about all that you need for next summer. Basics with a twist, made of luxury materials, can follow your steps day and night. White and pastels prevailed together with some adorable neutrals.
– Shades of blue and yellow, mixed or not, revealed a new sophisticated palette and inspired interesting tailoring with the interplay of volumes as predominant feature.
– Interesting textures, appliqués, and colored lace layered over differently colored fabric, created amazing patterns and motifs inspired by nature and especially by the magic world of butterflies.
– Fitted styles and feminine looks with very smart details such as prints or subtle glam elements.
– Selective use of sequined areas revealed the desire of women to be more discreet and sophisticated.
– Wonderful romantic details, embroidery, lace, crochet, transparencies and intricate appliqués were the main characteristics of amazingly conceived bridal gowns. The most impressive was one with white feathers at the hemline.
– Blue combined with black transparencies, ended up to be a very sexy ‘cocktail’.

The event’s highlight was of course Leona Lewis’s live performance at the end of the show, a very touching moment for all those who had a wonderful time during this season’s MB Fashion Week. Leona is certainly gifted; a wonderful voice that comes out effortlessly and magically. I was really excited after that, sharing later on, at a dinner, the whole fashionable experience with my best friends in NYC! Just Loved It and can’t wait till next time…
