NYFW FW19: Ulla Johnson was Charmingly Bohème

One of the most poetic and artisanal Fall/Winter 2019 shows of the NYFW, Ulla Johnson showered us in the audience with bohemian ambiance and dreamy live tunes.  Hand-crafted masterpieces including signature dresses and new outerwear styles allowed enough room for recognition of the important role tailors and artisans play in the implementation of each cool design. Ulla Johnson celebrates their work with richly detailed nonchalant runway looks. This season she focused among other things on incredible shearling coats. As proponent of slow fashion, her message goes around the idea of creating amazing clothes that last, and such coats are a great example of this.

Woven, knit, and embroidered details perfected by highly skilled experts with such diverse origins as Peru and India add value to the items.

The collection included ample daywear and eveningwear choices that showcase cohesiveness and a great juxtaposition of wearability and perfectionism. They were transcended with an aspirational spirit.

Bold motifs – printed and textured – felt sophisticated and modern. They included florals, animal prints, and other abstract ones with a tribal feel. Zebra ikat motifs looked fantastic as well as floral devore motifs. They came in between chic monochromatic-looking outfits which are the trend of the moment. Striped outerwear was layered over bohemian patterned dresses. Saffron yellow was the main hue in a rather colorful collection. It gave spicy earthy allure to many looks.

Shoulders accented with draping, ruffles, and paneling are figure-enhancing. Along the same retro lines, you could see billowy sleeves, frills, and high necks that imply prairie-chic Victorian references.

Leather, alpaca wool, and silk cause a great textural game.  Additional details of tactile value are seen in the imaginative handbag designs, regularly among my faves. Hoops, tassels, and oversize beads make for cool purse accents.
